I have always wondered in Literature lessons; what the point of analysing literary texts was. Till now I have yet to find a satisfactory answer. Sometimes I wonder if the authors themselves meant for their work to be analysed to such an extent. Be it verse or prose, no piece of work is left in it's original, beautiful and unmarked condition. Instead, it is ruthlessly torn apart by analysis techniques such as SLIMS and SPECS (lit students should know what these are). This is further aggravated by the
kiasu attitude of many, who consider literary appreciation to be some muggable subject. What is the point of literature now anyway? The utopian ideal of literary appreciation seems to be eroding. What has taken it's place is now mindless analysis of every word, sentence, punctuation mark and space.
